Tsubaki
A moment to unwind in the city.
Yayoi-cho's neighborhood Chinese eatery Tsubaki serves comforting machi chūka favorites, from its beloved omurice and savory umani soba to handmade gyoza.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step past the red shop sign into Tsubaki, and you will find an everyday neighborhood Chinese dining room where patrons gather over classic noodle dishes, sizzling stir-fries, and one surprisingly widespread favorite: omurice. The house-special omelette rice folds a tender thin omelette over home-style chicken fried rice tossed with chunky onions and chicken pieces. Unpretentious, nostalgic, and hearty even in standard portions, it makes it easy to see why the counter stays busy with regulars.
The rest of the menu stays faithful to beloved machi chūka standards. Piping-hot umani soba coated in glossy, savory starchy sauce and steaming bowls of tanmen crowned with crisp stir-fried vegetables warm you from the inside out. Noodle dishes can be paired with set extras such as half-fried rice or mini curry, where rich, gently spiced curry sauce contrasts neatly against clear Chinese broth. For a fuller meal or an evening drink over bottled beer, plump pan-fried gyoza with chewy skins and garlic-rich fillings sit alongside stir-fried pork liver with garlic chives.
There is a peaceful neighborhood rhythm here, from the rhythmic clatter of woks to the brief wait while each plate is prepared to order. Small gestures at the end of the meal—such as a complimentary sip of iced coffee or a bite of fresh fruit—speak to how the shop has quietly earned local affection over the years. Payment is cash only, so be sure to have coins or bills ready before sitting down.
